Overview

If you wish to discover Borneo’s untouched wonders, this six-day journey through Sandakan offers a complete experience. You will witness the breathtaking sight of millions of bats and swiftlets at Gomantong Caves, and cruise down the Kinabatangan River to spot the Borneo Big 5. Each morning, wake up to the soothing sounds of the rainforest and learn about its rich life at dedicated nature centres. The trip ends beautifully with a sunset viewed from a luxury cruise, creating a perfect farewell.

The lodge stands along the Lower Kinabatangan River, about two hours from Sandakan town. Built on stilts using local hardwood, it blends naturally with the forest surroundings. A boardwalk connects the jetty, restaurant, and chalets, providing both comfort and a peaceful escape in the heart of the rainforest. This lodge serves as a base to explore the rich variety of plants, mammals, and birdlife in the Kinabatangan region.

Bird lovers will find eight hornbill species here, along with kingfishers, egrets, darters, owls, kites, eagles, and many more. Other frequent sightings include broadbills, doves, storm storks, herons, hawks, ospreys, falcons, pheasants, parakeets, bee eaters, woodpeckers, pittas, bulbuls, forktails, babblers, warblers, flycatchers, orioles, flowerpeckers, and spiderhunters.

Besides birds, visitors may encounter the rare Borneo pygmy elephant, proboscis monkeys, gibbons, macaques, orangutans, Sumatran rhinos, crocodiles, wild boars, sun bears, and other unique wildlife, offering close encounters with Borneo’s most remarkable creatures.

Day 1 :

  • Pick up from Sandakan airport or hotel (time as arranged).
  • Check in at Sepilok Nature Lodge upon arrival.
  • Free at your own leisure for the day.
  • 19:00 — Dinner at Sepilok Nature Lodge.
  • Overnight at Sepilok Nature Lodge.
Day 2 :

  • Morning — Pick up from hotel lobby.
  • Visit Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre first activity.
  • Watch short documentary on orangutan rehabilitation efforts.
  • Walk to feeding platform to see orangutans.
  • Proceed to Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre visit.
  • Learn about small bears and chest markings.
  • Transfer two hours to Bilit Jetty.
  • Boat ride to Bilit Rainforest Lodge after arrival.
  • Welcome drink served during check-in at lodge.
  • 12:30 — Lunch at Bilit Rainforest Lodge restaurant.
  • 16:00 — River cruise to see monkeys and birds.
  • Possible sightings of Bornean pygmy elephants along river.
